Introducing the sand drawings that look three-dimensional when viewed from above by David Rendu, Constanza Nightingale, and Jamie Harkins of 3DSD .

What artists Jamie Harkins and Constanza Tagini Nightingale -Known as 3DSD (3D Sand drawings)-are doing takes 3D art to a whole new level.  Mt Maunganui beachgoers couldn’t help doing double-takes at a three-dimensional marine scene created on a stretch of sand between the Mount and Matakana Island, in New Zealand. Local artist Jamie Harkins oversaw its creation with help from fellow artists Lucia Lupf, David Rendu and Constanza Nightingale.

Inspired by 3D chalk drawings on pavement, he said he was keen to take the concept to the beach, using only a garden rake and a couple of sticks. The eye can trick the mind, making you believe there are dimensions that are not really there.

We’ve seen other people doing stuff on beaches, but it’s always been geometric, flat shapes, like a pattern, so we thought we’d get into the whole 3D thing,” said Jamie Harkins. “And I kind of like the fact that it disappears at the end of the day when the tide comes in. It makes it impermanent“.

Crevices, staircases into the ground, skateparks, and whimsical drawings – their imagination is transforming a sandy cove into stunning works of art.

The sun, the wind, the moon and the tides make our creations temporary and give us a challenging time for realisation. The use of simple tools is allowing us to create different textures, shades, contrasts and perspectives“, says Constanza Nightingale.
