Introducing the series of Fabergé Fractals created by Tom Beddard. And though it appear to belong in a Fabergé showroom, isin reality a collection of magnificent 3D images.

Laser Physicist/Web Devolper, Dr. Tom Beddard has been working towards creating a WebGL 3D fractal renderer that will allow the user to explore fractal structures in real time called Fractal Lab. His latest project, called Fabergé Fractals actually features the beauty of mathematics: the actual combination of geometry, math, and 3D technology that manages to create images so realistic that you are convinced you could pick them up and turn them over in  your hands. Like an ornate Fabergé egg, Beddard’s creations boast brilliant and intricate design patterns. The English artist uses a formulaic method to create his digitally rendered three-dimensional models.

The 3D fractals are generated by iterative formulas whereby the output of one iteration forms the input for the next. The formulas effectively fold, scale, rotate or flip space. They are truly fractal in the fact that more and more detail can be revealed the closer to the surface you travel. The fascinating aspect is where combinations of parameters can combine to create structural ‘resonances’ of extraordinary detail and beauty—sometimes naturally organic and other times perfectly geometric. But then like a chaotic system it can completely disappear with the smallest perturbation“, Tom Beddard explains.

About the artist: After finishing his PhD the booming world of the internet was more appealing than academia and so he became a web developer specialising in ecommerce and content management systems. For the past eleven years he has worked as a web developer for a variety of agencies in Scotland – and he has a fascination with the aesthetics of detail and complexity that is the result of simple mathematical or algorithmic processes. For him, the creative process is writing his own software and scripts to explore the resulting output in an interactive manner.
