Fiat group automobiles S.p.A. have announced through Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne the signing of the final agreement with Mazda for producing an open-top two-seater sports car for Alfa Romeo (apparently in an attempt to to overhaul the firm) at the Japanese brand’s Hiroshima plant from 2015.
The Alfa Romeo and Mazda agreement stipulates that both rear-wheel-drive sports cars will be differentiated with distinctive, brand-specific styling and feature proprietary engines unique to each model. In other words, the agreement foresees for both companies to develop two differentiated, distinctly styled, rear wheel drive vehicles, each to be powered by specific proprietary engines unique to their brands. Alfa Romeo and Mazda roadsters will be developed for the global market. Each version will have distinct styling and use engines unique to each brand, the companies stated.
Mazda says it hopes to revitalise global enthusiasm for convertible two-seaters through the partnership as well as enhance its development and production efficiency. For Alfa Romeo, the agreement presents the opportunity to deliver a modern interpretation of a classic roadster as the brand works towards the launch of nine new or updated models by 2016.
They say it’s the best of both worlds: Italian styling and power and Japanese build quality and reliability. Hopefully, it actually will be.
