Admittedly, this is just a canvas shaped chair with a drawing of a chair. But it can be used by leaning against a wall. It’s called “Canvas” and it bears the signature of Japanese design studio YOY.
Presented at Salone Satellite during Milan Design Week 2013, armed with a penchant for cryptic storytelling Japanese YOY design studio have developed “Canvas”. This is a series of two-dimensional hanging furniture pieces, constructed out of wood and aluminum. The volume is covered by an elastic fabric – screen-printed with drawings of different types of furniture. So it actually may well be used as a chair, when the frame is leaned against a wall, stretching when weight is applied, accommodating the user within the newly formed void. It is available in three different sizes and the hanging seats also come in three beautiful variations: as a stool, a love seat or a sofa.
“We tried to make products that change ordinary life a bit, with a feeling of something [going wrong]”, says one half of the design duo, Naoki Ono.
Remember: YOY [joi] is a Tokyo based design studio composed by Naoki Ono, a spatial designer (born in 1981, graduated in architectural design at Kyoyo Institute of Technology in 2008), and Yuki Yamamoto, a product designer (born in 1985, graduated in industrial design at Kanazawa College of Art in 2008.). They were brought together by a shared interest in investigating the grey area between space and objects. Started in 2011, their design theme is to create a new story between space and objects.
